Project Trans Europe

Photographing Europe’s most beautiful railway stations

Welcome to Project Trans Europe.

As a train driver and photographer, the railways play an important role in my life. I work for them, I have traveled all around Europe on them and they are very often the subject in my personal photography. Particularly the grand historic train stations of Europe, are something I love to photograph. The idea for a project where I photograph Europe’s most beautiful train stations came after doing a mini series in London where I took 3 long exposure images of the main concourses at Kings Cross, St Pancras and Liverpool Street stations, capturing the movement of people and the interaction with the station’s architecture. The idea has been playing in the back of my mind for quite a while, but now I am finally making it happen.

Working title

I am naming this project “Project Trans Europe” after the famous Trans Europe Express (TEE). The TEE was An international first-class railway service which in the second half of the 20th sentry connected all of the major cities in western and central Europe. It was the predecessor to today’s modern high-speed services such as TGV, Thalys or Eurostar…

The journey

This project will see me traveling to Europe’s most majestic railway stations, both historic and contemporary, to capture the grandeur of our railways. Of course, with a name like Trans Europe, it is only fitting I do this exclusively by train and nothing else. I am a huge advocate for train travel, and hope to inspire others to take the train more often instead of flying.

I have compiled a list of around 30 railway stations I am going to visit and photograph throughout Europe. With a list of that many locations spread out over an entire continent it will take quite some time to complete this project. I estimate it to take at least 3 to 4 years to finish, if I want to photography every station in detail. But I’m not in a hurry, because just like train travel, the journey is as important and enjoyable as the destination itself. You can follow my progress on social media where I’ll be posting updates and behind the scenes of the project.

Did I forget a station? Let me know.

All the images captured for project Trans Europe will be posted in high resolution on my Flickr page. This is the best place to follow the project if you want to enjoy Europe’s most beautiful stations in the best quality possible online. I will be organising the images in galleries per station so it’s easy to find a particular station or to get an overview of the stations I have photographed so far.
